![]() Never mind that on a cloudy day, its green and white design stands out against the rust-colored brick buildings of Florence here, the green becomes a whimpering verdigris. Even the famed Il Duomo is visually muted. The characters wear a lot of gray and beige, even the gentlemen's cravats are pale, and as for Florence, perhaps the most beautiful city in Italy, it is about as drab as ditchwater on a rainy November morning. There's nothing to be gained in a scene-by-scene comparison of the Merchant Ivory film and the new "Masterpiece" version, but it must be said that the first thing any viewer will notice about the new "Room" is the almost complete absence of color. Is the passage of 23 years enough to warrant a new version of E.M.
